How do I request additional maternity leave (aanvullend geboorteverlof)?

The request must be received by the employer at least 4 weeks in writing before the expected start of the vacation. You can request this leave if your child was born on or after July 1, 2020.

In exceptional cases, you can request an early vacation up to 4 weeks. For example, if there was a premature birth. In this case, you must inform the employer about your vacation as soon as possible.

What should be indicated in the application?

On your application for additional leave, you must indicate the following:

  • When you want to take a vacation. You can do this based on your child's expected date of birth, your partner's maternity leave, or your one week's maternity leave.
  • The number of whole weeks is from one to five.
  • How do you distribute the vacation - you can take one week (5 working days) of vacation or you can also distribute these 5 working days over 5 weeks.

An important condition for additional leave is that you must first take your weekly maternity leave (geboortevelof), only after it can you make a request for an additional one.

You must take your extra leave during the first 6 months after your baby is born. It should be noted that the employer has the right to adjust your additional leave of up to two weeks, if only this is required by the business interests of the company. For example, he may suggest that you take a vacation on other weeks or days. In any case, such changes should only take place with your agreement and must be recorded in writing.

Your employer is applying for Supplemental Leave Benefit on your behalf at UWV. This must be done 4 weeks before the start of the vacation and up to 4 weeks after the last day of the vacation. To do this, the employer will need your child's date of birth.
