Income requirements for obtaining a residence permit
24.04.2023When making a decision on issuing a residence permit (permit) or refusing to issue it, an important issue is whether a foreigner has legal means of subsistence. An applicant for a residence permit in the Netherlands must have an independent, stable and sufficient income. In connection with inflation, the amounts required for living also change. In 2023, the amount of income that a foreigner (or his sponsor) must have in order to obtain a residence permit has been adjusted. The amount of income required for living depends on the basis on which a foreigner applies for a residence permit. In addition to their own income, in some cases a foreigner can provide a sponsorship letter from a person who is ready to support him. When providing a sponsorship letter, income requirements are made to the sponsor.
From July 1, 2023, depending on the type of residence permit, the following income requirements are imposed on foreigners or their sponsors. Documented income cannot be less than the amounts specified in this article. All income is shown gross, that is, before taxes.
When obtaining a short-stay visa
On the basis of a short-term visa, it is impossible to issue a residence permit, but for its registration it is also necessary to confirm financial solvency, so we will tell you about the income requirements upon obtaining it.
Requirements apply to the sponsor of a foreigner. His income, excluding vacation pay, must be at least 1995,00 euros per month, and including vacation pay, at least 2154,60 euros per month.
Requirements are valid from July 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.
Residence permit for living with a family member
To live with a spouse or partner, he/she must have an income, excluding holiday pay, of at least EUR 1995,00 per month, and including holiday pay, at least EUR 2 per month.
To live with another family member, if the sponsor is married or has a partner, an income excluding holiday pay of at least EUR 1995,00 per month and including holiday pay of at least EUR 2 per month is required. If the sponsor is a single parent, he/she must have at least €154,60 per month of income, excluding holiday pay, and at least €1396,50 per month, including holiday pay.
Requirements are valid from July 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.
Residence permit for study
University students must prove that they have an income of at least 957,87 euros per month, and students of schools and vocational education institutions - from 786,59 euros per month.
If a sponsorship letter is provided, the requirements for the sponsor are as follows:
- If the student is studying at a university and the sponsor is married or has a partner, he (she) must have an income excluding vacation pay of at least 2952,87 euros per month, and including vacation pay - from 3.112,47 euros per month.
- If the student is studying at a university and the sponsor is a single parent or a single person, he (she) must have an income excluding vacation pay of at least 2354,37 euros per month, and including vacation pay - from 2466,09 euros per month.
- If the sponsor is studying at a school or vocational training institution and the sponsor is married or has a partner, he/she must have an income excluding holiday pay of at least EUR 2781,59 per month and including holiday pay from EUR 2941,19 per month. month.
- If the sponsor is studying at a school or vocational training institution and the sponsor is a single parent or single person, he/she must have an income excluding holiday pay of at least 2183,09 euros per month, and including holiday pay - from 2294,81 euros per month .
Requirements are valid from July 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.
Residence permit for paid work
The salary under the contract must be at least 1995,00 euros per month, excluding vacation pay, and at least 2154,60 euros per month, taking into account vacation pay.

Residence permit to perform paid work in certain professions in the field of art and culture
Depending on the profession, the salary must be at least the following amounts (EUR per month):
- A musician playing the 2nd violin, viola or double bass - 2383,
- Actor - 4233,
- Artistic director or his deputy of a dance, music, cultural workshop - 2987,
- Artistic director or artistic consultant in music and opera - 4020,
- Cultural Art Projects Coordinator - 2118,
- Choreographer - 3200,
- Music performer, dancer - 2039,
- Conductor - 4000,
- First accompanist - 4077,
- The first or solo wind player, the first harpist and the first timpani player (musician playing the timpani) - 2383,
- Chief Project Manager in the field of culture - 2536,
- Designer, artist (including sets, costumes, light, sound, video) - 1921,
- Deputy first accompanist - 2683,
- Director of projects in the field of culture and art - 4233,
- Musical and opera soloist - 4000,
- Solo cellist - 3017,
- Leading master class in the field of culture - 2118,

Residence permit for interns and trainees
The salary of a trainee, excluding vacation pay, must be at least 1.995,00 euros per month, and including vacation pay, at least 2154,60. For a trainee, these amounts are 997,50 and 1077,30 euros, respectively.
Requirements are valid from July 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.
Residence permits issued under the European Union Action Program
In order to apply for the status of kennismigrant or the EU Blue Card, a highly qualified foreigner in 2023 must receive a salary of at least (euro per month):
- At the age of 30 years and older (see note 1) - 5008,00,
- Under the age of 30 (see note 1) - 3672,00,
- When applying the criterion of reduced wages (see notes 1 and 2) - 2631,00,
- To obtain the EU Blue Card - 5867,00.

Residence permit for Kenis migrants and EU Blue Card

Note 1
If a highly skilled migrant hired before the age of 30 continues to work for the same employer, the salary criterion for young professionals also applies to him after reaching the age of XNUMX. If such a migrant has changed employers, a criterion according to age is applied to him. The criterion for reduced wages is independent of age and therefore remains valid even if a highly skilled migrant changes employer.
Note 2
The reduced wage criterion can be applied in the following situations:
- The employer applies for a residence permit for a highly skilled migrant during or immediately after the one year granted to foreign graduates of Dutch universities to search for work.
- A highly skilled migrant lost his residence permit issued to him to look for work as a graduate of a Dutch university, but had such a residence permit before. The employer must apply for a residence permit for a foreigner within three years after the migrant graduated from the university.
- A highly skilled migrant has never had a residence permit to look for work after graduation, but was entitled to receive one. The employer must apply for a residence permit for a foreigner within three years after the migrant graduated from the university.
Residence permit to work as a researcher, trainee doctor or guest lecturer
The salary must be at least 1396,50 euros per month excluding vacation pay or 1508,22 euros including them. The same requirements apply to highly skilled migrants, provided they are employed in these positions.
Residence permit for startup staff
During 2023, start-up employees are subject to a salary requirement of at least 2631 euros per month, excluding vacation pay.
Residence permit for entrepreneurs
The gross profit of the entrepreneur, including holiday pay, must be at least 1.508,22 euros per month.
Requirements are valid from July 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.
Residence permit under the Au Pair program
The Au Pair program allows young foreigners to live with Dutch families in exchange for help with housework and childcare. The host family must meet the following income requirements:
- If the host is a spouse or partner, they must have an income of at least 2992,50 euros per month excluding holiday pay and 3231,90 euros including them.
- If the parent of the host family is single, he must have an income of 2394,00 euros per month, excluding vacation pay, or from 2585,52 euros including them.
Requirements are valid from July 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.
Residence permit for treatment
Depending on the circumstances, the financial requirements for foreigners arriving for treatment in the Netherlands are as follows:
- If the person arriving for treatment is the spouse or partner of a resident of the Netherlands, then the Dutch partner must have an income of at least 1995,00 euros per month excluding vacation pay or 2154,60 euros including them.
- If the person arriving for treatment is the child of a single resident of the Netherlands, then the Dutch person must have an income of at least 1396,50 euros per month excluding vacation pay or 1508,22 euros including them.
If the sponsor of the arrival of a foreigner for treatment is a person who is not related to the patient by family ties, then the following requirements are imposed on the sponsor:
- If the sponsor is married or in partnership and the foreigner is single or a single parent, the sponsor's monthly income must be at least EUR 3790,50 excluding holiday pay or EUR 4093,74 including holiday pay.
- If the sponsor is married or in partnership, and the foreigner's marital status is the same, and the partner comes with him to the Netherlands, the sponsor's monthly income must be at least 3990,00 euros excluding holiday pay or 4 euros including them.
- If the sponsor is single or divorced, and the foreigner is married or in partnership, and the partner comes to the Netherlands with him, the sponsor's monthly income must be at least 3391,50 euros excluding vacation pay or 3.662,82 euros including them.
- If the sponsor is single or is a single parent, and the foreigner is single or is a single parent, and the child comes to the Netherlands with him, the sponsor's monthly income must be at least 3192,00 euros excluding vacation pay or 3447,36 euros including them.
Requirements are valid from July 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.
Permanent residence (permanent residence permit)
Upon receipt of permanent residence, the main applicant must confirm his income at a level not lower than 1396,50 euros per month excluding vacation pay or 1508,22 euros including them.
There are also income requirements for family members of the main applicant:
- If a family member is married or in partnership, you must confirm an income of at least 1995,00 euros per month excluding holiday pay or 2.154,60 euros including them.
- If a family member is a single parent, you need to confirm an income of at least 1396,50 euros per month excluding vacation pay or 1.508,22 euros including them.
Requirements are valid from July 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.
Other types of residence permit
If the recipient of the residence permit is married or has a partner, he must have an income of at least 1995,00 euros per month excluding vacation pay or 2154,60 euros including them.
If the recipient of the residence permit is single or is a single parent, he must have an income of at least 1.396,50 euros per month excluding vacation pay or 1.508,22 euros including them.
Requirements are valid from July 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.
Important note!
To confirm the stability of the income of the applicant for a residence permit, the Immigration and Naturalization Service of the Netherlands (Immigratie en Naturalisatiedienst - IND) often checks income for the previous three years.
