Prolongation of residence permit / permanent residence

First, let's take a look at the residence permit that cannot be extended.

What kind of residence permit cannot be extended? Residence permit for temporary purpose of stay. There is a maximum validity period for such residence permits. It can be extended only if the initial period was less than the minimum. You can read about temporary and non-temporary purposes of staying in the Netherlands here.

Residence permit types with a maximum validity of 1 year:

• Residence permit of a participant in the exchange program for work and leisure (Working Holiday Program / Working Holiday Scheme)
• Residence permit for those who came by exchange (Uitwisseling particuliere organisatie)
• Residence permit for a nanny (Au pair)
• Residence permit for trainee or trainee (Verblijf als stagiaire of practicant)
• Residence permit for an annual job search for a highly qualified specialist (Zoekjaar hoogopgeleiden)

By the way, the residence permit for seasonal work has a maximum stay of 24 weeks. Renewals are only possible if you have had a permit for less than 24 weeks.

When can the residence permit be renewed?

You can apply to the IND up to 3 months before the expiry of your residence permit. The IND will have enough time to make a decision. If approved, your new residence permit will be ready on time.

Is your residence permit still valid for more than 3 months?

Then you cannot submit an extension request yet. The IND will not be able to properly assess your application.

As for the extension of permanent residence, the permanent residence document is always issued for 5 years. If it expires, you can request an extension.
