From January 1, 2021, the border between the state Republic of Ireland or Republic of Ireland (Republic of Ireland) and Northern Ireland as part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain due to Brexit became the external border of the European Union (EU). In other words, the island is divided into two parts, of which most of the south (Republic of Ireland) is an EU country, and the northern part, which is part of the UK, has become part of a state that is no longer part of the EU.
