On June 23, 2016, the UK organized a referendum on the country's membership in the EU. On that day, the people of the United Kingdom voted on the question: should the UK remain a member of the EU or should it leave? The opponents of the European Union won with an absolutely meager advantage of 1,89%. As a result, on January 31, 2020, the UK left the European Union on the basis of the Agreement on the withdrawal of the UK from the EU. (The EU — UK Withdrawal Agreement).

However, for obvious reasons, it was impossible to do it all at once. A transitional period applied from 1 February to 31 December 2020, during which the UK continued to comply with all EU laws and regulations. And during this time, the countries had to agree on their future relations.

On December 29, 2020, the Agreement was approved by the EU member states, and on December 31, 2020, by the UK Parliament. However, the European Parliament has not yet done this. Therefore, from January 1, 2021, the Agreement is valid on a temporary basis, but the new rules have already entered into force.
