Refugee status in the Netherlands allows you to legally stay in the country and work. However, not all foreigners can apply for this status: there is a list of safe countries, natives of which actually have no chance of obtaining asylum in the Netherlands.
The following are currently on the Dutch list of safe countries of origin: Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Georgia, Ghana, India, Jamaica, Kosovo, Morocco, Mongolia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Ukraine, Senegal, Serbia, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, USA. It is believed that the inhabitants of these countries do not have the risk of persecution on the basis of race, religion, sexual orientation, etc., in these countries there is no risk of torture and inhuman treatment being applied to the inhabitants of these states. Therefore, citizens of these countries actually cannot apply for asylum in the Netherlands. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, the status of Ukraine as a safe country of origin has been temporarily suspended, but not cancelled.
