Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Service (Immigratie en Naturalisatiedienst (IND)) reminded employers that foreign doctors must be registered in the BIG registry when hiring. If this rule is not observed, it is impossible to work and obtain a residence permit for a foreign medical specialist in the Netherlands. The reason is that the unskilled actions of a doctor, paramedic, nurse and other members of the medical profession can be extremely dangerous for their patients.
Even holders of Dutch medical degrees are subject to registration in the BIG registry. For foreign doctors, documents confirming their registration in the BIG registry are a necessary part of the package of papers for obtaining a residence permit in the Netherlands.
The name BIG-register is perceived by many, by analogy with English, as the “Big Register”. In fact, this is an abbreviation of the name of the Dutch Law on Certain Medical Professions (De Wet op de beroepen in de individuele gezondheidszorg (Wet BIG)). In the Netherlands, only persons registered with the BIG-register are entitled to a medical title (doctor, nurse, etc.) and work in a medical specialty.
