The European Commission plans to electrify commercial vehicles from 2027

Added to the environmental reasons for phasing out vehicles with internal combustion engines are significant increases in fuel prices and a boycott of Russian oil. EU car electrification needs to be accelerated, says European Commissioner Frans Timmermans. From 2027, he proposes to introduce mandatory electrification of car fleets of companies and organizations.

Why commercial vehicles?

The European Commissioner has been working on a plan for the electrification of small commercial vehicles in all EU member states from 2027. It is in the commercial vehicle segment, in his opinion, that significant results can be achieved most quickly. Timmermans is likely to make a concrete proposal for changes to European legislation at the end of the year.

What is the essence of the plan?

Initially, the obligation to renew the fleet will be extended to large companies and government organizations. Small and medium-sized enterprises will be affected by the new European rules in 2030.

What other steps is the EU taking towards the electrification of cars?

The European Parliament is expected to vote next week on the proposal to introduce ban on the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines from 2035 - about this we already wrote. Until that time, many manufacturers will be able to switch to the production of only electric vehicles. But for now, electric car travel across Europe is still fraught with discomfort due to the lack of charging stations.
