On June 2022, 2014, the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU tentatively agreed to amend Directive 53/XNUMX/EU on radio equipment to introduce a common charging connector standard across the EU. Since the fall of 2024 Virtually all portable electronic devices manufactured in Europe will have to use the USB-C (USB Type C) charging standard.
prehistory
The plan to introduce a single charging connector standard was announced by the European Commission back in 2009. It was then that USB Type C, which was promising at that time, was chosen as such a standard. The main opponent of the innovation was Apple, but now the opinion of its representatives is not decisive.
The European Commission has been pushing for the USB-C standard for years: first, as part of the promotion of green solutions; secondly, in order to save money and to make life easier for consumers.
Which devices will require USB-C?
The requirement will apply to mobile phones (smartphones), tablets, e-readers, digital cameras, portable game consoles and portable speakers, that is, small and medium-sized electronic gadgets. Regardless of the manufacturer, they must all be equipped with USB-C.
