On June 2022, 2014, the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU tentatively agreed to amend Directive 53/XNUMX/EU on radio equipment to introduce a common charging connector standard across the EU. Since the fall of 2024 Virtually all portable electronic devices manufactured in Europe will have to use the USB-C (USB Type C) charging standard.

prehistory

The plan to introduce a single charging connector standard was announced by the European Commission back in 2009. It was then that USB Type C, which was promising at that time, was chosen as such a standard. The main opponent of the innovation was Apple, but now the opinion of its representatives is not decisive.

The European Commission has been pushing for the USB-C standard for years: first, as part of the promotion of green solutions; secondly, in order to save money and to make life easier for consumers.

Note! The variety of chargers currently results in far more plastic being used than necessary. Each consumer owns an average of three chargers for electronic gadgets, two of which are actively used. Discarded chargers are annually converted into 11 tons of e-waste.

Which devices will require USB-C?

The requirement will apply to mobile phones (smartphones), tablets, e-readers, digital cameras, portable game consoles and portable speakers, that is, small and medium-sized electronic gadgets. Regardless of the manufacturer, they must all be equipped with USB-C.

Important! The requirement will also apply to laptops, but with a delay. Notebook manufacturers given an additional 40 months after the changes to the relevant directive come into force for a painless transition to the standard.
