The European Parliament's Environment Committee has approved a bill banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035. Such a measure will reduce carbon dioxide emissions across Europe by 25%. According to the results of preliminary polls, the bill is also supported by the majority of deputies, so it can be adopted in the coming months.

Operation of previously purchased cars

The bill is about a ban in the European Union from 2035 on the registration of all cars whose exhaust contains carbon dioxide. Only new hydrogen-powered vehicles and battery-powered pure electric vehicles will be allowed. That is, all new gasoline and diesel cars fall under the ban. The operation of cars purchased earlier will not be prohibited.

Cars on synthetic fuel

Comparative tests of cars running on conventional and synthetic fuels have shown that this alternative to gasoline also pollutes the environment. Synthetic-fuel cars are also planned to be banned in the EU, but this is not yet a final decision. Since many automotive brands are investing heavily in the development of this fuel, there is a chance that something will change, a better formulation will be found that provides environmental benefits.

Note! Synthetic fuels are combustible liquids that are produced from carbon (CO2) obtained from air, electricity and water, completely without the use of fossil fuels.

The problem of charging stations

In many EU countries, the situation with access to chargers for electric vehicles is not yet acceptable. And this is one of the main arguments against the ban on cars with internal combustion engines. Automakers are hoping that eventually MEPs will decide to cut CO2 emissions by 90% rather than 100%, leaving a limited number of petrol and diesel cars to be sold. In addition, the bill needs to be supplemented with provisions for the construction of a network of charging stations on European motorways.

2035 is still a long way off. But now we can all help reduce carbon emissions. For example, do not buy cars with high emissions. We suggest before you buy check for free a car that is registered in the Netherlands!
