The laws of the Netherlands allow the employment of foreign citizens only after the employer has received the appropriate permit. But for Ukrainian refugees, the authorities decided to make an exception. From April 1 to May 31, 2022, employers were exempted from the obligation to obtain a work permit for Ukrainians. And now this exemption has been extended, as reported in Government newspaper of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Staatscourant van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden).

Why did the authorities make such a decision?

The release of employers from the obligation to obtain work permits for Ukrainian refugees under temporary protection was originally a temporary measure. Until May 31, a transitional period was established, during which it was planned to resolve the issue with the documents of Ukrainians. Many people who arrived from Ukraine did not have proper documents for identification and verification.

But as of May 31, the mass registration of Ukrainians by the migration service (IND) has not yet begun. At the same time, a large influx of Ukrainians to the Netherlands continues, so they decided to extend the transition period.

What are the expiration dates now?

According to the order of the Minister of Social Affairs and Employment of May 24, 2022 No. 2022-0000113757, the transition period, which was supposed to end on May 31, 2022, has been extended until August 31, 2022.
