Every year in the Netherlands, several dozen young people after the death of moms and dads find themselves literally on the street. According to the existing rules, adult children must leave the home rented by their parents within only two months after their death (or one of them). They cannot "inherit" the lease.

This seriously worried VVD MP Koerhuis, who proposed changing the existing order. His initiative was supported by the Minister of the Interior, Ollongren.

As a result, the social recruitment sector now has new rules:

  • Adult orphans (18 to 27 years old) are eligible for temporary housing rent so that they have more time to figure out what to do next. It is assumed that such a contract will be concluded for a period of up to 2 years.
  • According to the Homeowners' Code of Conduct (just drafted), young people who have lost their parents (both or one) will be offered a personalized solution to keep them out of the street. That is, the landlord, for example, can adjust the rent for the house to make it more affordable.

“Young people who have lost their parents need to be able to focus on coping with the loss. Thanks to the agreements reached, they can continue to live in the parental home for a longer period of time and they do not need to worry about their life situation. It gives you more peace of mind and helps you deal with grief. I am glad that we were able to conclude these agreements with the landlords, "- wrote in his letter to the House of Representatives, Minister of the Interior Ollongren.

Ollongren is also working with the Minister for Legal Protection on a draft regulation that will enable adult orphans to live longer in their parent's rented home without the consent of the landlord. The act will be valid for both social and private employment.
