The period of spring holidays begins. Easter and May holidays are ahead, and now you can start planning your free time. For your convenience, we present you a small calendar of weekends and public holidays in the Netherlands in April-May. And we want to remind you that public holidays do not always mean a day off for employees. According to Dutch law, days off are clearly stated in employment contracts between employer and employee or in collective bargaining agreements.
April 4-5 - Easter... Monday, April 5th, is an official day off. On this day, all government agencies and most enterprises are closed.
5 May - National Liberation Day. Celebrating the anniversary of Liberation Day is an official paid holiday and is specified in many collective bargaining agreements. However, this is not an annual holiday, but one that is provided once every 5 years, that is, in 2020, then in 2025.
April 27 - King's Day. This is an official holiday, which means, formally, a day off. Those working on this day will receive 100% of their salary, plus a bonus for work on a holiday in the amount of 100%. In total, this is 200% of the salary for the worked shift. But this does not apply to all areas of activity. Many collective bargaining agreements, such as those in the home care sector, contain a King's Day holiday agreement that stipulates this day for workers. Thus, they will receive their regular salary on that day, without a raise.
In addition, from May 1 to May 9, 2021, schools in all provinces of the Netherlands have May holidays. But do not forget that the government does not recommend traveling abroad until May 15, 2021.
We wish you a great weekend and good weather!
