Owners of Dutch vehicles pay road tax, which directly depends on the weight of the vehicle. Electric cars have heavy batteries, so the road tax on them must be high. Currently, owners of electric vehicles are exempt from this tax, but this benefit should be phased out. What awaits electric vehicle owners?

According to government sources, in the spring memorandum the government intends to announce the phased abolition of the road tax benefit for electric vehicles. It is currently planned that the benefit will be canceled in 2026: first, in 2025, owners of electric vehicles will have to pay 25% of the road tax, and from 2026 - 100%. The government intends to change this.

The public is concerned that the abolition of the benefit will lead to an increase in the number of vehicles running on petroleum products. Heavier electric vehicles will cost owners more than gasoline and diesel ones. Last year, Parliament instructed the government to study how to ensure that electric vehicle owners pay at least no more road tax than owners of fossil fuel-powered vehicles. The government has been given a deadline of 2024 to conduct research and accept proposals.

For now, the government plans to extend the transitional grace period, which it should announce in a spring memorandum. From 2026, owners of electric vehicles will pay 60% of the road tax, from 2029 - 65%, and from 2031 the benefit will be abolished. Time will tell what will happen next with the road tax on electric vehicles.
