The number of private entrepreneurs working for themselves without hired personnel (ZZP) is growing rapidly: from 2014 to 2024, the number of such entrepreneurs increased by 85%. Women are more likely to register this type of employment: they showed an increase of 101%, while men added only 77%. So far, the number of men in the ZZP segment is still larger, there are 61% of them versus 31% of women, but it is clear that the situation may change. The total number of ZZP over the past 10 years has increased from 875 thousand to 1,6 million. Interestingly, the most intensive growth in business registration is observed in the youngest (19 to 24 years old) and oldest (65+ years old) age group. Among older entrepreneurs, the age group of 70+ years is leading in terms of growth in the number of registrations!
The number of private entrepreneurs is growing in all sectors of the economy, except wholesale trade. The top three economic sectors with the highest number of entrepreneurs look like this:
- Services - 440 people,
- Construction - 218,
- Healthcare - 202.
Of the total number of ZZPs in the Netherlands, 27%, 14% and 13% of private entrepreneurs work in these industries, respectively. There is also a strong increase in the number of private entrepreneurs in the following areas of activity:
- Help for people with disabilities,
- Laying telecommunication and electrical lines,
- Internet trading,
- Outpatient medical care for youth,
- Social work,
- Private security,
- Rest,
- Consulting services in the field of public relations and communications,
- Graphic design,
- Ground transport services.
