Getting an education in the Netherlands is not the cheapest “pleasure”. But, as a result, in addition to receiving a European diploma, one of the pleasant bonuses is a tax deduction, which allows you to reduce your taxable income.
How do I get my tuition tax deduction?
The tuition tax deduction is requested when filing an annual tax return. Very often, training lasts for several years, in which case it is necessary to file tax returns for each year sequentially from the beginning of the training until the moment you receive your first income / go to work and start paying taxes. Therefore, we recommend filing a return from your first year of study.
What are the conditions for a tax deduction for studying in the Netherlands?
- you did not use a DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs) loan for education and you did not receive a study scholarship;
- the education you received is necessary for your job;
- you paid for the training yourself from your own funds (from your personal bank account);
- the payment was made during the period of your residence in the Netherlands.
What training costs are deductible?
- payment for full tuition, for a separate course or payment for exams;
- learning materials that you need to study, such as textbooks or computer programs (software);
- required in accordance with the chosen course, compulsory protective clothing (for example, gloves or boots).
What training costs are non-deductible?
- buying a laptop / laptop, tablet or printer;
- public transport costs;
- rent (interest) on a student loan
What will be the refund amount?
The refund amount depends on many factors, but it will be roughly no more than 30-40% of your total training costs.
