That the change of BTW numbers for private entrepreneurs is coming we already wrote and now it has begun! Our clients began to receive letters with new numbers.

So what is in these emails and what to do with the new numbers? What are BTW-id and ob-nummer and how do I use them?

All private entrepreneurs will receive such letters this fall (2019). The letter will contain two numbers btw-identificatienummer and omzetbelastingnummer. From 2020, the first of them (btw-id) you will have to use for contacts with clients and business partners, and the second (ob-nummer) will remain for your contacts with the tax office.

You will have to indicate the BTW-id in your invoices and on the website, replacing your old BTW-number with it.

This is done to increase the confidentiality and protection of personal data, since previously the BTW number of a private entrepreneur also included a citizen registration number (BSN - burgerservicenummer). The new VAT identification number (BTW-id) looks like this: country code – NL, 9 digits, letter “B” and a 2-digit check number. For example: NL000099998B57.

And your current BTW number will now become your tax number - omzetbelastingnummer (ob-nummer), you will continue to use it when contacting the tax authorities, for example, if you write a letter or call the tax office.

This tax number looks like this: your citizen registration number plus B01, B02, and so on: 111234567B01.

As you can see, everything is simple. And all this with care for the protection of your personal data. Good luck with your business and don't forget to make changes to the website and your invoices.
