Sales through online platforms such as Vinted, Marktplaats and Bol are under close scrutiny by the tax authorities (Belastingdienst). Even if you sell used items, the tax office may be interested in you. In accordance with the EU Directive DAC7, online trading platforms must collect and transmit to the tax authorities information about the income of sellers. For now, Belastingdienst is interested in those who make 30 or more sales per year, and those who have earned a total of 2000 euros or more. For the first time, Internet platforms transmitted this information to the tax authorities on January 31, 2024.
Second-hand sellers usually treat their business as a hobby, but now they fear various sanctions. Tax officials assure that they will not be too strict for now. Money from such extra income can be reported in a regular declaration as “Other income.” Typically, those who regularly earn money on Internet platforms and those whose earnings exceed 10 euros per year should think about registering a business.
