In 2023, approximately 140 migrants from other countries arrived legally in the Netherlands. This is less than in 000, but problems with accommodating and providing for migrants have only intensified. There have been calls to limit migration before, and now the committee on demography, created by the government in 2022, has made such a proposal.

What does the demographic committee report say?

The committee, based on statistical data, assumed that by 2050, between 26 and 45% of the Dutch population will be first or second generation migrants. Currently, there are 25% of such migrants in the country.

The Netherlands is one of the most populous countries in the EU. The arrival of large numbers of migrants has already triggered a housing crisis. The Committee expresses fears that with uncontrolled migration, crises will arise in the areas of education, social protection and medicine, when the country will not be able to pay for these services to migrants.

At the same time, the problem of aging and reduction of the country's indigenous population is acute in the Netherlands. The Committee believes that by 2050 the country's population should be about 19-20 million people: this number of inhabitants is considered optimal.

Based on its calculations and assumptions, the committee recommends that the government take control of migration. The committee's proposals relate to limiting the provision of asylum and labor migration; it is proposed to introduce target migration figures and ensure their implementation.

It is recommended to reduce the intake of refugees. The reason is that refugees usually have low levels of qualifications and integration, therefore they have difficulty finding work and are usually in constant need of government assistance. It is also recommended to improve the quality of labor migration by focusing on highly qualified specialists.

What are the threats to recently arrived migrants?

There are no threats at this time. The Netherlands is a rule of law state, and everyone who has already been granted asylum will retain it. In addition, the country fulfills its obligations within the EU, so no one will evict refugees.

Ukrainians who are under temporary EU protection and wish to stay in the Netherlands should consider changing their status to a residence permit. There are possibilities for this! We can help you get a partner residence permit, but about the possibility of obtaining a residence permit as a highly qualified specialist and through doing business find out at the consultations of Sergei Graf.
