In 2023, the Dutch government increased the health care benefit (Zorgtoeslag) by €412 as a one-off increase. In 2024, this decision will no longer apply and the benefit amount will decrease. If in 2023 benefit recipients could claim 154 euros per month, then in 2024 the amount will drop to 123 euros per month.

This amount is not enough to cover the monthly premium to health insurance companies. The cheapest basic health insurance policy is sold by FBTO: it costs 131,95 euros per month. Accordingly, the benefit recipient will have to pay at least 8,95 euros per month (107,4 euros per year).

Companies such as Aevitae, Menzis, VGZ and Zilveren Kruis are willing to sell basic health insurance for €123 per month. However, the requirement for their acquisition is an increase in the deductible (part of the cost of treatment paid by the insured patient) from 385 euros to 885 euros. Health insurance experts advise people at risk, especially retirees, not to agree to higher deductibles. In the case of frequent or severe illnesses, paying an increased deductible can ruin the patient.

About 4,5 million Dutch people have health insurance benefits. They are received by pensioners, students, the unemployed and low-income workers. The maximum health care coverage is €37 gross for a single person and €496 gross for partners.

A health insurance subsidy is an important addition to the budgets of poorer Dutch residents. If you don't receive it yet, order Zorgtoeslag via Nalog.nl!
