The work of the tax authorities in the Netherlands brought additional revenue to the budget in the amount of 840 million euros last year. Belastingdienst recognize that this is the result of increased control of enterprises and organizations. In 2022, 8707 audits were carried out, 940 working hours were spent and 000 tax specialists were involved. The report on the control and fight against fraud was submitted at the request of Parliament, which expressed concern about the reduction in the exactingness of the tax authorities. Compared to 783, Belastingdienst's activity increased, but the number of checks was still lower than in 2021.

What does the Belastingdienst report say?

The tax authorities of the Netherlands attribute the decrease in activity in conducting tax audits of companies to the coronavirus pandemic, which made it difficult to conduct them in 2021 and early 2022. In addition, the removal of the tax on savings and investments by the Supreme Court and the lack of decisions on its return also had a negative impact on budget revenues. Belastingdienst carried out most of the audits on small and medium-sized enterprises, and it was they who made most of the additional charges of more than 500 million euros. Tax authorities have also run into problems using fraud detection software due to allegations of breach of confidentiality, making it easier for fraudsters.

In 2022, the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration imposed a total of 3865 administrative fines for intent or gross negligence in filing incorrect declarations.
