On March 7, 2023, the updated Schengen Information System (SIS) began to work in all Schengen states. This system allows the border and law enforcement services of the Schengen states to exchange information: information about wanted or missing people, about persons who are prohibited from entering or staying in the Schengen area. In addition, the system has information about material objects - cars, weapons, documents - that were lost, stolen or used in the commission of crimes.

The new system has received an update to SIS Recast, which allows for the proactive registration of vulnerable individuals subject to a ban on leaving the country. This capability helps protect children and anyone in need of special protection from the risk of possible abduction, human trafficking and sexual abuse.
