Paying fines for traffic violations in 2023 is not a cheap “pleasure”. The government is proposing to increase fines by almost 10%, in line with rising consumer prices. And the increase will be five times greater than last year, when fines only increased by 2%. So far, only preliminary amounts of fines for traffic violations for 2023 are known.

Rationale for the increase

According to the Ministry of Justice and Security, the strong increase in fines is the result of recent high inflation. Fines for traffic violations are adjusted based on the consumer price index. This alone results in a 9% increase. Since the amounts will also be rounded to the nearest tens from 2023, the increase will be even more significant.

“There is even worse news for motorists,” says Independer automotive expert Menno Dijcks. “We are also noticing that some insurers are already raising their auto insurance rates. However, we do not yet see trends in the entire market.”.

Parliament's reaction

In The Hague, not everyone agrees with the increase in fines. Life is already becoming more expensive, so a number of political parties do not consider it necessary to increase fines for traffic violations. At the same time, supporters of the increase object that fines can be easily avoided - you just need to drive by the rules. While the issue of fines is being debated in Parliament, a final decision will be made shortly.

Driving without insurance

If you cause damage to your uninsured car, the costs will of course be at your expense. But you can also get a fine from the National Highway Traffic Agency (RDW). “RDW checks to see if cars are insured,” Dijks says. Otherwise, you will be fined 400 euro. You have an insurance obligation from the moment you own the car, so make sure you get good car insurance as soon as possible.”.

Speeding tickets for cyclists

There are speed limits for cyclists. For example, in residential areas throughout the Netherlands, road users on bicycles are allowed to drive through the neighborhood at a maximum speed of 15 km/h.

I must admit: it is quite difficult to accelerate even to 30 km / h on a regular bike. But for high-speed bicycles, which can reach a maximum of 45 km / h, a yellow license plate is required, with which this category of two-wheeled vehicles is already on the road. For exceeding the speed on a bicycle up to 10 km/h you will be fined 40 euros, in addition to this, the fine will be 60 euros.
