The Dutch government will allocate 1 million euros to support representatives of the creative intelligentsia, forced to flee their countries in connection with the Russian attack on Ukraine. This project will be financed by the Ministries of Culture and Science and Foreign Affairs. Each of them will allocate 500 thousand euros. This was announced at an online meeting with the Minister of Culture of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko, Secretary of State for Culture and Media Gunay Uslu.
Secretary of State Uslu said that in the Netherlands they consider art and culture to be a kind of bridge between people and states. The support program for cultural figures will help preserve this bridge even in difficult times of war. Therefore, not only Ukrainians will receive support, but also Russians who fled to the Netherlands from the Putin regime.
The support program is currently being developed by six national cultural foundations: the Film Foundation, the Dutch Literature Foundation, the Mondrian Foundation, the Performing Arts Foundation, the Creative Industries Foundation and the Cultural Participation Foundation. The program is run by the Foundation for Dutch Literature.
How will the support program work?
Access to the funds of the program will be available to creative people and groups working in the sectors: fine arts, creative industries, cultural heritage, cinema, literature and performing arts. The maximum amount of a grant to support a specific person or project is 10 euros.
This money can be used to rent housing or a creative studio, buy tools and other necessary materials, to continue the creative work of refugees from among the creative intelligentsia temporarily hiding in the Netherlands. The goal is the continuity of the cultural process and its restoration in Ukraine after the end of the war.
