In an interview with Voice of America, Alfred Kammer, director of the IMF's European Department, said that although the Ukrainian government wants all refugees to eventually return to their homeland, some of them may live in European countries for a long time, and some will stay there forever. For Europe, which is experiencing a labor shortage, this may be a positive factor.
Although the IMF has reduced the forecast for economic growth in the countries of "old Europe" by one, and in Eastern European countries by one and a half percentage points, economic growth will continue. At the same time, the economies of Eastern Europe have smaller volumes, but are growing faster than in the "old" EU members. The growth of economies requires a new workforce, and the population of European countries is aging. Close to Europeans in Christian mentality and hardworking Ukrainians can be useful to the countries of the European Union.
As of April 19, 2022, about 5,034 million people left Ukraine. Most of them are located in the EU countries.
