The Dutch government is lifting the requirement for passengers to wear masks at the country's airports and on board aircraft as of May 21. This decision is consistent with international recommendations drawn up by the European Aviation Administration (EASA).

What about the coronavirus?

European epidemiologists say that the current version of the virus is less dangerous than previous ones. However, the coronavirus has not gone away, many people are still infected with it. Wearing a face mask can help prevent infection and the spread of the virus. The same applies to other anti-coronavirus tips, such as washing your hands regularly and coughing into your elbow.

Vaccinations work well for many people – with their help, a large group of people have developed resistance to the virus. People with vulnerable health are advised (voluntarily) to wear a medical mask. At the same time, all passengers must follow a simple rule: do a self-check before flying. If there are signs of illness, especially if the coronavirus test is positive, you should not go to the airport.

What about wearing masks in the world?

If you are going on a trip abroad, be sure to find out what the rules are at the airport, the plane and the country you are going to before flying. This can be done through the website of the airport, airline or travel company. Travel recommendations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs can be found on the page Wijsopreis.nl.

There are international guidelines for wearing masks at airports and aircraft, developed by the European Aviation Administration (EASA). Last week, the agency announced that these recommendations have been amended. From Saturday, May 21, wearing a mask will no longer be mandatory at airports. But each country decides for itself how it relates to these guidelines. As a result, the rules at airports and planes are not the same everywhere.

The Dutch government has decided to fully follow the international recommendations. At the same time, the authorities will continue to closely monitor the situation with coronavirus and take action if further relief can be made - or if the virus flares up again.
