Great news for all car owners! The Consumers Association has been fighting the deficiencies of the auto insurance system for years, and this effort has paid off. The Dutch Association of Insurers has decided that accident-free years are divided after divorce and/or inherited by the partner in the event of the death of the insured.
The number of years without accidents significantly affects the amount of insurance payments: the more such years, the lower insurance premiums. Until 2022, accident-free years were accrued only in the name of the insured. When he died, his significant other lost all the accumulated years and had to start everything from scratch, which led to a significant increase in the amount of contributions. In the case of divorce, the situation was the same.
But now everything has changed. In the event of a divorce or dissolution of a registered partnership, the years that the insured did not apply to the insurer are simply divided.
People who lease cars and then decide to own their own vehicles can also take back their accident-free years. To do this, they will need to contact their insurer with leasing documents. In addition, the years in which the insured was not involved in a traffic accident abroad can also be included in the Dutch insurance.
