Breaking news! In the Netherlands, short-term visas and residence permits are being extended

People who are unable to leave the country due to the prevailing situation with the coronavirus can apply for a visa or residence permit extension to the IND, but only in this exceptional situation. However, it is important to understand that an extension can only be granted for people who are based in the Netherlands and registered with the European Visa Information System (VIS).

It is important to know that a residence permit, which expires in the near future, and the owner of which cannot leave the country due to the situation with COVID-19, is not automatically renewed! This is why it is very important to apply for renewals on time. The IND will take into account the individual situation in order to make a decision.

Persons whose visas are not registered in the European Visa Information System (VIS), but who also cannot leave the Netherlands, do not need to take any further action. In this exceptional situation, the Dutch government is sympathetic to those who are forced to stay in the country longer than allowed. However, the government expects that these people will make every effort to return to their country of permanent residence as soon as possible.
