This short article is a cautionary tale for those who work two jobs at the same time (or two days a week for one and three for the other); moved within a year from one job to another with a significant change in salary; has inconsistent small wages in different places or works and receives some kind of allowance.

When filing a tax return, you may face such an unpleasant situation when you are asked to return a fairly large amount to the tax authority, although it seems that all your taxes should have been deducted even when calculating your salary.

Why is this happening?

This is due to the fact that when calculating wages, the employer (or rather the accounting program) automatically deducts from there the discounts due to the person (general tax discount - algemeneheffingskorting and discount for employees - arbeidskorting). Thus, it turns out that when you receive a salary in several places, you use these discounts several times, whereas they are only valid once. It is these that the tax office will offer you to return at the end of the reporting year.

Therefore, it is very important to choose which job will be your main job, where this discount will be deducted, and on everyone else you will be warned that this is the second / third / fifth job. There is a special form, filling which, you must put a tick in the right place. And somewhere it is enough to verbally warn the employer.

This will inevitably lead to the fact that you will receive a much lower net salary and even more taxes may be deducted from you than you should have. But you can always return them when filing a return at the end of the year, which is much more pleasant than paying extra tax.

If you worked in different uitzendbureau not even at the same time, this can also be a problem, because every new uitzendbureau does not know about your past jobs. This means that the more jobs you have in this way, the more times these discounts could be deducted from your salary. Therefore, be sure to warn about this on new jobs.

This also applies to benefits received. When calculating them, you are deducted from you the algemeneheffingskorting due to all residents of the IL, but if you are still working somewhere else, then it is also deducted there. That is, again, you need to warn at work or when receiving benefits that this discount has already been applied to you elsewhere.

In the event that you worked full-time at two jobs consecutively and the salaries were approximately the same, then most likely this situation will not affect you and you will not have to pay anything extra. But in any case, it is better to consult with the employer.

If for some reason it is impossible to consult or with no one, you can always order a trial calculation from us and see what such combination threatens you and how to use your tax rebates most profitably.
