Good afternoon The situation is as follows: I completed my master's degree in the Netherlands in July 2018, and started working in July 2019 (as a kennismigrant). I know that in theory it is possible to return some part of the tuition fees through taxes. Please tell me if this is possible and if so, in what year - 2020 or 2021?

Good day, Karina!
You can actually get a refund on your taxes and get a deduction for your education expenses. Declarations are submitted sequentially for all years in which you had educational expenses - if you paid for your master’s degree in 2017, then declarations are submitted for 2017, 2018, 2019. In the year when you have income on which you will pay taxes (you go to work), you will return these taxes from this period. Please note that in 2020 we can file a return for 2015 - no later. Those. Training costs until 2015 will no longer be taken into account.

Thank you very much for your answer! It turns out that you need to submit 2 declarations, one for 2017 and one for 2019?

Good day, Karina!
We apologize for the late response. It all depends on what years you paid for your graduate studies - if, judging by your previous answer, it was in 2017, then tax returns for 2017 and 2018 are re-filed (or submitted for the first time, if they were not filed earlier), and submit a declaration for 2019. Because Tuition fees are refunded only from the moment you return to work, and this happened in 2019. Since you did not work in 2018, the amount of the cost of your education must be repeated in the 2018 declaration, transferring it from the 2017 declaration. In total, at the moment, you need to submit THREE declarations for the THREE last completed calendar years.

Good afternoon Victor
You can call the Dutch tax office at 0800-0543 or order this service for communication with the tax office from us – 30 euros + 21% VAT. It is possible that the tax office does not have your bank details for a refund.
