Starting June 1, 2023, the rules for early termination of contracts with electricity and gas suppliers will change. This information is posted on the government website.
The changes will affect consumers with relatively small volumes of purchases. These are households, the self-employed, shops, small associations, public organizations and small businesses.
The changes to the rules for compensation for termination of energy contracts apply only to small consumers of electricity and gas - and only to contracts concluded after May 31, 2023. For contracts concluded earlier, the old rules apply: when terminating the contract earlier than the established date, the consumer pays a fixed amount (from 50 to 125 euros).
According to the new rules, the amount of this payment is not fixed and depends on the amount of losses incurred by the energy supplier due to the fact that the contract is terminated ahead of schedule. The amount of compensation will depend on:
- the volume of the contracted, but not redeemed energy resource;
- the difference in the cost of the resource (electricity or gas) specified in your contract and the cost of this resource under the contracts that the supplier is currently entering into.
The new rules for calculating compensation apply only to contracts with a fixed term and a fixed price of the supplied energy resource. For other contracts, the fee for early termination of the contract is not charged.
Taking into account the fact that it does not make much sense to terminate expiring contracts for the supply of gas and / or electricity, it must be stated that consumers who wish to terminate contracts for the supply of energy resources ahead of schedule will have to pay suppliers larger amounts of compensation than before.
