On July 21, 2022, the European Union adopted a new package of sanctions against the Russian Federation related to the ongoing aggression against Ukraine. The purpose of imposing sanctions is to put pressure on Russia in order to force the Russian Federation to stop the aggression against Ukraine. 9 legal entities and 48 individuals have been added to the sanctions lists. Even more limited is Russia's ability to receive the proceeds that this country uses to kill Ukrainians.

The seventh EU sanctions package includes the following most important measures:

  • The import of gold and jewelry made of this metal from the Russian Federation is prohibited. Russia is one of the largest gold exporters in the world. Sanctions will significantly reduce the budget revenues of the aggressor country and make it difficult to finance an aggressive war against Ukraine.
  • Stricter rules have been introduced that oblige individuals and legal entities included in the sanctions lists to notify the state authorities of the EU countries about the presence of their property in the European Union. If the notification is not made, and the property is found, this will be considered a violation of the sanctions regime and will result in a more severe punishment.
  • The sanctions list includes 48 individuals and 9 legal entities. The most famous organization on the list is Sberbank of Russia, the largest universal bank in Russia and Eastern Europe. Among the well-known individuals included in the sanctions list are Moscow Mayor Sobyanin, the head of Rostec Chemezov, actors Bezrukov and Mashkov.
  • The ban on the export of dual-use goods to Russia has been extended - products and technologies that can be used for both peaceful and military purposes. For a complete list of such products and technologies, please visit website of the Government of the Netherlands.
  • The implementation of the previous six sanctions packages will be strengthened by clarifying and amending legislation based on the report of the National Coordinator for Enforcement and Enforcement of the Sanctions Regime, Stephanus Blok. These corrections will not allow sanctions to be circumvented due to loopholes in the laws. More about Blok's report - in our article.
  • The previous six packages of sanctions have been extended until early 2023.
  • It is clarified that the sanctions imposed on Russia did not and do not in any way concern the import and export of food products and fertilizers. The Russian Federation uses this false argument in the process of negotiations to unblock the export of Ukrainian food products and demands the lifting of sanctions that were never imposed.

The European Union confirmed that it supports Ukraine's right to self-defense against Russian aggression and building a peaceful, democratic and prosperous future.
