The Embassy of the Netherlands in Ukraine is open again. On April 16, part of the staff of the diplomatic mission, headed by the ambassador, returned to Ukraine. This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Mr. Hoekstra (Wopke Hoekstra, Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, viceminister-president).
So far, diplomats are working from Lviv. Shortly before the Russian invasion, the embassy moved there from Kyiv. The Embassy has taken additional security measures to protect personnel, including from rocket attacks.
More and more EU countries are returning their diplomats to Ukraine. So, France and Italy resumed work in Kyiv. Ultimately, the Netherlands also intend to move to the capital. “As soon as it is safe enough,” the minister said.
Why are the embassy staff returning right now?
According to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, it is now extremely important to have a reliable idea of the current situation in Ukraine. In particular, to assess the degree of security in the country. For communication with the Ukrainian government (and this is an important part of diplomatic work), diplomatic mail and contacts are of great importance. “It is also important to look at how our partners in Ukraine deliver humanitarian aid and where exactly it is needed,” the ministry’s website says.
