NS will release a new day ticket for teens aged 1-12 on September 18st. It will allow young people to travel unrestrictedly around the Netherlands by train during the day off peak hours and on weekends for only € 7,50.
“Young people like to travel independently,” says NS director Tjelling Smith. “They prefer to spend the day in the city or with their family. The cost of a train ticket for them will soon rise. For children under 12 years of age the train is free if they are traveling with someone, and it is often free for students too. Young people under 18 fall in between.”
NS itself also believes it will benefit from the introduction of the youth card. The company's own research shows that 71 percent of young people want to travel more often by train if the price is more attractive. In addition, 57 percent of parents indicated that they will travel more often with the whole family.
Teenagers can buy a new ticket through the NS app where they need to register. This does not require an OV chip card. The turnstile at the station can be opened with a barcode.
