The world is changing, everything is moving, a series of changes has begun in the Netherlands.

And just the other day, Minister Wouter Coolmeis (he actually is a Tit, if translated) proposed to combine the pension deposits that existed before and send all the money into one, centralized one.

After all, before, as it was, bakers have their own fund, medical workers have their own, and sellers have a third. And so you worked in the summer while studying at AH or Hema and the tax deduction went to a separate fund. And then they worked somewhere else and the money went to another fund. Little money, I must say, because the salary was small, and you did not work there for long. Well, having learned to be a doctor, they began to work as a doctor, and these taxes were already going to the medical pension fund.

And since then in several funds are your, if you please, savings, which may be as little as 400 euros. And the fund has work, accounting, notifying you about the presence of such untold wealth and other bureaucracy. In general, one loss is your hard-earned store. Starting from January 2019, your pension will follow on your heels, namely, it will be transferred to the next pension fund, and not stored in the previous one. Thus, the entire amount will be accumulated in one account.

Dutch media headlines sound promising:
"More pension by combining small pensions"
"Free money for those who previously had part-time jobs"

Is everything so rosy and what does this mean in reality for mere mortals, for you and me?

First, a little theory to improve, so to speak, tax literacy.

First, everyone who has ever paid taxes in the Netherlands has retirement savings. EVERYONE HAS. Even if taxes were minimal.

  • Secondly, the pension has three parts:
government component (AOW), automatic income tax deductions. The employer makes them automatically. This pension is guaranteed by the state, and even if you have never donated anything there, then upon retirement, the municipality (gemeente) will add or add your pension to the minimum. They won't let you die, but you can afford a little with this money.
  • aanvullende pensioen (maximum 12 percent of the salary, set up by her employer, but not for all categories, for doctors this is a must)
  • Self-configurable pension that a person either organizes for himself or not. This, in principle, can be done with great benefit.

Third, the pension can be redeemed. Or, more correctly, pick up. Pension funds were obliged to inform citizens about this and send a request when they adopted the corresponding change, and citizens, in turn, had to fill out a form in order to receive their 500 euros now, without waiting for them to turn into +2 euros to their monthly pension. Not everyone was able to do this, but such an opportunity was and still remains. True, here you must remember that as soon as you receive this money, it will become your income, which means you will have to pay tax on it. The same as what you pay during this period from your main income.

It was! And what has become now? Now, before January 1, 2019, citizens still need to make a decision what to do with all their mini-pensions: whether to take them away or let them merge into one, but larger one. There is one thing, but this applies only to those deposits that fall in the range from 2 to 468 (do not ask why) euros.

At the same time, if you do not manage your pension in any way, it will go into the common pot (yours, but consisting of all past deductions) automatically. But also all deposits that, as a result, will give you less than 2 euros per year in addition to the basic pension, will also automatically burn out. Is this good or bad? Where did they come from? You decide.

Who's guilty? and what to do?
Remember everything! All my past jobs and part-time jobs. Find out where the pensions owed to you for those two months at the cafe are kept. To do this, you need to go to the website https://www.mijnpensioen.nl/ and check everything there using your DigiD code. Receive. Or they will automatically go to your general retirement account. And you need to be in time before January 1, 2019!

Is it worth it? Rather yes, because according to statistics in the Netherlands 380.000 pensions are less than 2 euros, and if your money there, for example, is already 50 euros, then this is already something.

It will make it easier for pension funds, that's for sure. Is it beneficial for citizens? Probably yes. Where is all this going? Perhaps the transition to the American system, when there is no guaranteed pension at all, but only what citizens organize themselves.

If you do not have the strength, time or desire to do all this, but you want to deal with the issue of retirement in the best possible way, the nalog.nl team will be happy to help you.
