If you work with migrant workers or live in Helmond yourself, this news may seem alarming. The municipality has decided to introduce residence tax for migrant workers who live in the city but are not registered with the BRP.

What exactly is happening?

According to the city's estimates, Helmond is home to from 6,000 to 8,000 people, which are actually located in the municipality, but are not officially registered.

Now, for each such employee, the landlord will pay:

👉 €4,50 per person per night

Formally, the landlord pays the tax, but the authorities don't hide it: these costs may be passed on to the workers themselves.

Why did the authorities take this step?

The city explains its decision simply: These people use roads, waste collection, sports facilities, and public green spaces.

But at the same time do not participate in the financing of these servicesThe new tax should change that.

Important: Helmond specifically installed quite a high tariffto motivate people register with the municipality, rather than paying every day for accommodation.

Why registration is not scary, but beneficial

We understand that the word "registration" often causes stress. But let's get down to the facts:

If you are planning to live in the Netherlands more than 4 months, registration in BRP is legal obligation.

In addition, registration provides real benefits:

  • 💶 Regular municipal taxes are cheaper, than €4,50 per night
  • 🧓 The right to state pension AOW
  • 🩺 You can get it healthcare allowance (health insurance benefit)
  • 🧾 In the future - the right to social assistance

As Helmond's deputy mayor says, the goal is for migrant workers to not be "invisible" but a full-fledged part of society.

What landlords and employers need to know

The tax will be strictly administered. For landlords, this means:

  • declaration and payment once every six months;
  • reminders and official demands in case of delay;
  • in extreme cases - forced collection.

For employers, this is a signal: employee registration issues can no longer be ignoredMistakes here mean unnecessary costs and risks.
