According to Dutch laws, age is not an obstacle to starting a business, but there are restrictions for minor entrepreneurs. Which ones exactly? Parents and guardians are responsible; they can cancel transactions, but this does not stop young entrepreneurs.
In 2019, only 112 minor entrepreneurs were registered with KvK, but now there are 355 of them. Mostly these are teenagers aged 14, but there are also 10 ten-year-old entrepreneurs! Most child entrepreneurs work in the online trade of fashion items, jewelry and sweets.
Previously, the Chamber of Commerce (KvK) reported that between 2014 and 2024 the number of self-employed entrepreneurs increased by 85%. In 2014, there were approximately 875 non-employed self-employed people in the Netherlands (ZZP), and now there are just over 1,6 million.
