The day before, on Budget Day or in Prinsjesdag, Willem-Alexander in his "speech to the throne" stressed that everything is in order with the Dutch economy. Read more about Prinsjesdag here.

“A country that, economically, can compare itself with the best,” he said at the Great Church in The Hague.

The monarch noted that the priority for the state is to correct mistakes in the case of benefits and to pay compensation as soon as possible. We wrote more about the so-called subsidy scam. here.

The king also named the main problems that need to be solved in the near future. Namely: housing shortages, nitrogen oxide emissions and inequality of opportunity. In addition, he mentioned “complex problems”: climate change (he remembered the flooding of houses in Limburg) and the difficult geopolitical situation (the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan).

Like last year, the king said a few words about the pandemic. He thanked the doctors and expressed condolences to all those affected by the virus.

About the plans of the government

Medicine

Insurance premiums are expected to increase by 2,75 euros. For people on low incomes, this increase is offset by an increase in health benefits. The so-called eigen risico (the amount that the insured pays at the first visit to the doctor, only after that the insurance company will pay your expenses) will remain unchanged – 385 euros. Wrote more about eigen risico here.

The Ministry of Health will allocate 2,1 billion euros for the fight against coronavirus.

Climate

Following up on the Urgenda court rulings, the cabinet has allocated money for measures to reduce CO2 emissions.

Our reference

In 2015, the organization urgent, fighting for a clean environment, won a case in which the state had to allocate more funds so that in 2020 they emitted 25% less greenhouse gases than in 1990. The execution of the decision was postponed.

6,8 billion euros will go towards additional measures to combat climate change and “green” subsidies to companies and individuals. The Netherlands also plans to add € 1,3 billion to the $ 100 billion annual amount that the international community has pledged to developing countries to tackle climate change.

Accomodation

Of the billions allocated for climate, 514 million euros will go to the "national thermal insulation program". It provides subsidies for the isolation of 20 percent of the most poorly insulated owner-occupied or rented homes in the Netherlands. The idea is that a well-insulated house will be better at saving energy and therefore CO2 emissions.

€288 million will go towards subsidies for hybrid heat pumps. A hybrid heat pump is a central heating system that can produce heat using either gas or electricity. Such a heat pump currently costs much more than a conventional central heating boiler, and therefore the government is trying to stimulate the desire to purchase such pumps.

To solve the problem of housing shortages, the ministers decided to allocate an additional one billion euros for the coming years. Earlier, two billion euros were already allocated to finance housing construction, but they were clearly not enough. They wrote about the housing program until 2030 here.

Fighting crime

Approximately half a billion euros will be allocated to fight crime. Part of the money will be invested in improving the monitoring and security system. 100 million will go to local police officers and almost the same amount to the criminal investigation department and other police services. Police unions say the money will help close gaps in some positions.

Education

There is no additional money allocated for education in next year's budget - this was done earlier this year. For example, 8,5 billion euros have been set aside for this and the next two years to compensate for delays in learning caused by the pandemic. In particular, schools can hire more teachers with this money.
